North Slope Borough School District Curriculum

The North Slope Borough School District is currently revamping curriculum. Utilizing the Understanding By Design method of creating district and classroom units, our Curriculum Development Team is leading teachers across the Slope in the development of a curriculum in which the Iñupiaq Learning Framework is the foundation.

The process began in August 2010 with a week of training under the facilitation of Jay McTighe, who co-authored Understanding By Design. Mr. McTighe will again be visiting the District in August 2011 to assist us in furthering the process. Teachers across the District will be participating in development of cornerstone assessments and course & classroom unit design throughout this year. 

A steering committee, comprised of stakeholders throughout the community will be convened during 2011/2012 to review documents that have been drafted in order to provide input and feedback as we progress in this development.
