Maintenance and Operations

The North Slope Borough School District, (NSBSD) Department of Maintenance and Operations exists exclusively to provide support for delivery of the District’s Instructional Program for the students of the NSBSD.

The Department is responsible for the following district wide operations:

  1. Facility Maintenance and Custodial Service of approximately 700,000* square feet included in more than 20 structures located at 15 school and support sites. *This number does not include Teacher Housing, which is also a responsibility.
  2. Transportation of students in one of the harshest climates on earth.
  3. Food service consisting of two meals per day in many schools.
  4. Teacher Housing maintenance and administration.
  5. Capital Improvement planning and implementation.
  6. Employee, student, and general public site environmental and physical safety programs.
  7. Federal and State compliance programs including OSHA, Fire and Safety regulations for all school facility users.

The Department continuously implements new materials and construction techniques in order to reduce maintenance requirements. These efforts have been successful as evidenced by the fact that there are 1.4 fewer maintenance employees budgeted in the current fiscal year budget than there were in 1990 while facility area has increased by 116.3 %.
The M&O Department consists of 130.5, (100 Full Time Equivalent) employees. Departmental operations are administered from Barrow and cover the district area of the approximate size of Nebraska where temperatures can range between 70F and -100F.

Transportation

The Transportation Department has two distinct functions.

The department provides the safe transportation of students to and from home. This includes Barrow and 7 villages across the North Slope ranging 89,000 square miles. Bus service for field trips and other school activities are also provided. The other function of transportation is Preventative Maintenance  for  all District owned light and heavy duty vehicles.
Pupil Transportation services are provided for ECE through 12th grade for students in Barrow, Point Hope, Nuiqsut, Anaktuvuk Pass, Atqasuk, Point Lay, Wainwright, and Kaktovik. There are 19 buses district wide, 12 of these buses are located in Barrow. The average daily bus rider throughout the district is 1200 students per day.  All the routes operated in the District are considered hazardous by the State DOE. To be considered hazardous a route must meet certain criteria concerning safe walking conditions to and from school. All students who live within 1 1/2 miles of school in Alaska are supposed to walk to school. The lack of sidewalks and walkways, darkness, extreme weather conditions and the threat of polar bears are the factors considered in declaring our routes hazardous.

NSBSD has a fleet of light duty vehicles consisting of Explorers, Suburbans, pickup trucks, vans, bobcats, and loaders. Maintenance of  vehicles in barrow is the responsibility of the lead mechanic, vehicles in the villages are the responsibility of the Itinerant Mechanic. District employees are responsible for their own Preventative Maintenance on the vehicle that are assigned to them. The plant managers and mechanics when needed, fly out to the villages to help take care of the village vehicles when an  Itinerant Mechanic is not available.

Food Service

The North Slope Borough School District Food Service Department operates under the direction of the National School Lunch Program, a division of the United States Department of Agriculture.

This program is regulated through the Alaska Department of Education and Early development.

The school meals are closely scrutinized to insure that the students are receiving highly nutritious foods from each of the five food groups each and every day. Our menus have recently been analyzed by the state regulatory agency to insure that we are feeding our students the proper levels of nutrients to enhance the children’s performance, behavior, and development.

The North Slope Borough School District Food Service Department is active in it’s efforts to serve the students healthy meals, cutting the sugars, salts, and fats as much as possible, while maintaining food products that are enjoyable to the palate.

Our Food Service Manager has an open door, anyone with comments or suggestions please call (907) 852 9631 or Email Bob Eason, our Food Service Manager.
