HMS Science Field Studies

September 29th, 2008

Hopson Middle School budding scientists, led by teacher Ms. Deb Greene, and assisted by several community members and parents, ventured out to begin their field studies for science.

Deb Greene states, “Students were testing the reservoir of Barrow drinking water behind the middle school. These tests include testing the pH (acidity), the amount of dissolved oxygen, the temperature, the turbidity (how loudy/how much particulate matter is in the water), general appearance, and aquatic organisms they could find. As a class we will discuss the health of the surface water of Barrow by analyzing our results.”

Students also set up experiments (long term) to measure temperature at different depths of soil within the active layer. They also set a 40 foot transit to measure the active layer soil depth. Each week students will go out and take measurements, then plot the change in temperatures at the different depths and look at the freezeup pattern of the transit site.

The students will be integrating subject matter as they will use reading, writing, math, and science skills to complete the field study experiments.

“Mr. and Mrs. Adams, Ms. Skin, Mr. Pikok, and Dr. Steve Hastings were the primary community members out in the cold and wind with us. There was also support from the police department, school administration, Mr. Taylor and Ms. Babylonia, also school employees. We couldn’t have completed such a success event without their contributions,” added Ms. Greene.

The pictures depict the students doing water quality monitoring activities as well as collecting their first set of data for a long term soil temperature project.

HMS Wolves Cross Country Team

September 25th, 2008

The Hopson Middle School Wolves Cross Country Team took home a “best team” trophy in its only cross country meet of the 2008 season. Seventeen runners represented the school at the Tikigaq Invitational in Point Hope on Saturday, September 20. Teams from Wainwright, Atqasuk, Point Hope, and Barrow competed.

The course started at Tikigaq School, followed a paved road, eventually connecting to a dirt road, onto a beach ordering a lake, onto an expanse of tundra, back onto a gravel road, back to pavement and the finish was at the school where community members and teams were waiting and cheering.

“The Point Hope course was a lot harder than expected, it covered alot of terrain that we hadn’t practiced on. It was the epitome of ‘cross-country’. I’m so proud of all of my runners for stepping up,” Coach Scott Calhoun states. Coach Calhoun is a second year teacher, returning to HMS and his cross country coaching position again this year. Scott Calhoun hales from Anaconda, Montana.

When asked about cross country at HMS this year, several student athletes respond. “The best thing I like about cross country is that I like to run,” states 8th grader Nasuayaaq Solomon. Alaina Bankston, 8th grader, adds, “What I like about Mr. Calhoun is that he pushes us to do our best.” Paige Bowen, 8th grader oncludes, “Mr. Calhoun is tough, but that’s what every cross country team needs.”

The cross country team includes: (Front row left to right): Johnathan Nelson, Justin Aamodt, Robert Pikok, Nasuayaaq Solomon, Billy Thompson, Elmer Thompson, Devan Amling (Back row left to right): Coach Scott Calhoun, Andrea Singson, Ariana Salamat, Hilary Lowery, Manilyn Balancio, Paige Bowen, Maaya Kelly, Donna Sabo, Ida Rexford, Stephanie Nelson, Alaina Bankston

HMS Wrestling Camp

August 6th, 2008

Hopson Middle School, under the direction of Principal Michael Seifert, sponsored a wrestling camp for students ages 8-18 years old. Over 30 boys and girls participated in the three-day event.

Coach Miles Vanhee returned to the Slope to put on his third clinic in Barrow. Coach Vanhee is the head wrestling coach for Western State College. He is recognized in wrestling as a two-time All American and three-time state champion in Colorado.

Coach Vanhee is well acquainted with the wrestlers of the North Slope as several high school wrestlers have participated in his summer wrestling camps in Gunnison, Colorado.

The student athletes were put through rigorous practices from basic to advanced wrestling techniques. “The student athletes represented the student body of the North Slope in a positive manner,” commented Mr. Seifert. He also added, “Involving the younger students in wrestling camp activities helps better prepare them for wrestling at the high school level.”

For more information on how to get involved in wrestling at Barrow High School or Hopson Middle School, please contact the BHS Athletic Director, Frankie Arnhart @ frankie.arnhart@nsbsd.org or HMS Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, Roger Wells at roger.wells@nsbsd.org.
