Exchange Program
Exchange programs have become an important addition to our school. Two programs are affiliated with the Alaska Humanities Forum. The Rose Urban Rural Exchange Program sends two Alak School high school students to an urban community in Alaska, either Juneau or Fairbanks, to live with a family there and attend school in a large urban high school. In exchange, two students from an urban area come to Wainwright to live with families here and attend Alak School. The purpose of the program is to make connections between urban and rural communities to help increase communication and understanding of issues in the state of Alaska.
A second exchange program affiliated with the Alaska Humanities Forum is the Sister School Exchange. Our middle school is working with Wasilla Middle School in Wasilla, Alaska, sharing aspects of home and school life. A visit to each other's respective schools takes place in the spring semester. These exchanges offer a great opportunity for our students to experience life outside the village and to share village experiences with others.
