Extra-Curricular Activities
After-school activities for students consist mostly of recreational time in the gym or swimming pool provided by community recreation funding from the school district. There are also extra-curricular activities for high school and middle school students, and community basketball for elementary students in grades 2 through 5. Local youth groups from the area's three churches also have activities for students. Other at-home activities include watching television, listening to music, and playing video games. The community library is open after school and on Saturdays.
Students have a broad exposure to experiences that students in other places do not have, such as subsistence and cultural activities, which provide them with the necessary means and skills to live in this area. Fishing, waterfowl hunting, caribou hunting, whaling, Eskimo dancing and singing, skin sewing, carving, and crafts using baleen from the Bowhead whale comprise the majority of traditional activities.
Extra-curricular activities are an important part of the overall program at Alak School. We have a number of activities that are provided through Added-Duty Contracts with certified and classified staff. The following is a list of extra-curricular activities:
- Cross Country Running
- Middle School Boys' and Girls' Basketball
- Mixed-Six Volleyball
