Welcome to Alak School
Alak School is located nearly 350 miles above the Arctic Circle on the coast of the Chukchi Sea in northern Alaska. It is a unique place with strong traditions and friendly people.

Exchange programs have become an important addition to our school.
Extra-Curricular Activities
After-school activities for students consist mostly of recreational time in the gym or swimming pool provided by community recreation funding from the school district.
School Staff
Alak School has 15 full-time certified staff members, one is funded by a Title I grant and one is a school counselor. There is a full-time principal and 20 classified staff. Many staff members are local residents.
Wainwright Community
The community of Wainwright, Alaska, is located 136 km (85 miles) southwest of Barrow, Alaska on the coast of the Chukchi Sea. It is part of the North Slope Borough which comprises more than 88,000 acres across the northern regions of Alaska.
Wainwright Demographics
Wainwright is the third largest village in the North Slope Borough with a population of 546 according to the 2000 census. The population of the village peaked in the late 1990's' at around 650 residents and has been declining in the past 5 years.
History of Alak School
The origin of the village of Wainwright can be traced back to 1904 when the first schoolhouse was constructed. At the time there were fewer than 100 residents.
