Sharing What We Know About Bowheads
Sharing What We Know About Bowheads
Students in Ms. Exe¹s 8th grade Language Arts class have been corresponding
with students in New Bedford, MA. The program was designed to have the
students teach each other about the whales important to their local
communities. Justina, Adrian, Ransom, Felicia, and Heather shared
information that they know from personal experiences and what we had learned
in our research and through talking with experts. These students
participated in a video conference and shared information about the bowhead
whale on December 9th. In turn they learned about the right whale from the
New Bedford students.
Justina is a member of the Quvan Crew and had done a previous talk at the
UIC Science Center called After the Whale is Caught. Adrian in a member of
the Panigeo Crew captained by James Pebley. One of his jobs is to chip
ice for fresh water. Ransome is a member of the Patkotak Crew. The captain
is Simeon Patkotak. Ransome has gone out in the spring time to help break
trail with the crew. Felicia is a part of the Avaiyak Crew, the captain is
Leslie Itta. She and her mom have just recently started helping with the
preparations for whaling and making sure that the whalers have what they
need. Heather is a part of the Hopson 1 Crew and often helps with the
