Bordered by the foothills of the Brooks Range to the south and the Arctic Ocean to the north, the borough encompasses 89,000 square miles, an area the size of Minnesota. Fifteen percent of Alaska's land mass lies in this region, all of which is located above the Arctic Circle.

The North Slope is a land of superlatives. On an annual basis, its coastal area has the coldest climate in Alaska; the region contains the nation's largest oil field; and Barrow, the northernmost community in the United States, has one of the largest Eskimo populations in the world.

Visitors to the North Slope Borough will witness spectacular contrasts. In summer, the sun stays above the horizon for 84 days, and in the winter it disappears for 67 days. Temperatures range between a comfortable 60 F and a chilling minus 40. In every village, the ancient traditions of the Iñupiat Eskimos coexist with state-of-the-art technology.
