School Board Goals
Vision
Every child of the NSBSD will be proficient in reading, writing and mathematics. Every child of the NSBSD will understand and treasure the values, culture and language of the Inupiat people. Every child of the NSBSD will be prepared to enter the workplace or pursue higher education, understanding their role in the community and in their families.
Mission
The North Slope Borough School District is committed to providing opportunities to help all students to become productive and contributing citizens. Students will maintain our values of caring, sharing, and giving by understanding our history and traditions.
Educational Philosophy
Education, a lifelong process, is the sum of learning acquired through interactions with one's environment, family, community members, schools, and other institutions and agencies. Within the Home Rule Municipality of the North Slope Borough, "schooling" is the specific, mandated responsibility of the North Slope Borough School District Board of Education.
The Board of Education is committed to providing academic excellence in the "schooling" environment. This commitment to academic excellence shall focus on the learner, recognizing that each student brings to the "schooling" environment his own
interest, learning styles, cultural background and abilities.
2006/2007 School Board Goals
The North Slope Borough School District Board of Education adopted these Goals on August 3, 2006:
- All students will become proficient in reading, writing, and mathematics.
- The Inupiat values, language and culture will be integrated into the regular school curriculum, instructional and assessment process.
- The North Slope Borough School District will create an effective communications plan.
2005/2006 School Board Goals
- Create teaching and learning environments where all students have an opportunity to become proficient in reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Define the role and purpose of the Inupiaq/Bicultural program while effectively integrating those findings in the regular school curriculum, instructional, and assessment process.
2004/2005 School Board Goals
- Adopted by the North Slope Borough School District Board of Education August, 2004
- Create teaching and learning environments where all students have an opportunity to become proficient in reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Define the role and purpose of the Inupiaq/Bicultural program while effectively integrating those findings into the regular school curriculum, instructional, and assessment process.
2003/2004 School Board Goals

- Improve the rate of attendance for every North Slope Borough School District student.
- Refine the Distreict's Inupiaq/Bicultural Program collaborativel with parents and community.
- Achieve proficiency in reading, writing and math by every North Slope Borough School District student.
- Improve planning, instruction and accountability through the use of multiple measures of student achievement aligned with the District's standards-based curriculum.
- Increase the participation of parents and community in the shared responsibility of educating all of our children.
- Coordinate Career/Technical Programs (Voc.Ed.), to provide more local job opportunities, job shadowing, mentoring, and work experience.
- Encourage the development of local teachers.
2001/2002 School Board Goals

Short Term Goals
- Improve the rate of attendance for every North Slope Borough School District student.
- Refine the District's Iñupiat/BicuItural Program collaboratively with parents and community.
- Achieve proficiency in reading, writing and math by every North Slope Borough School District student.
- Improve planning, instruction and accountability through the use of multiple measures of student achievement aligned with the District's standards based curriculum.
- Increase the participation of parents and community in the shared responsibility of educating all of our children.
- Continue to develop and expand the Career/Technical Program (vocational education), local Job Shadowing.
- Programs and On-the-Job Training Programs (OJT) to better prepare our students for the job market in cooperation with other agencies and businesses.
- Encourage the development of local teachers.
Long Term Goals
- Increase family participation through staff involvement in community events including home visits, parent/teacher conferences, and invitations to school assemblies sent to parents, guardians, and extended families.
- Provide encouragement, recognition and incentives to our students, employees and parents that will have a positive impact upon attendance. Improved attendance leads to improved academic performance, better self- esteem, and reduces school dropouts.
- Improve instructional time on-task and use of time.
- Continue to develop and expand the Career/Technical (Vocational Education) Program, local Job Shadowing Programs and On-the-Job Training (OJT) Programs to better prepare our students for the job market in cooperation with other agencies and businesses.
- Place a priority on the attainment of reading, writing and math skills by each student. The Board believes that reading, writing and math skills are essential to a successful education.
- Use disaggregated data to assess and improve student achievement.
