Efficient school business management is vital in order for the teaching and learning process to occur.  It is an exciting and challenging area of public education.

Did you know that the importance of planning for school business management was recognized in colonial statues?  The original colonies required that a committee of freemen establish revenue, collection and expenditure procedures.  The Act further stated that if the town failed to provide for the school, the county was then empowered to establish and order levies to support the school.

School business today involves all aspects of financial operations; staff are responsible for accounting, payroll, purchasing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, investment banking, fixed assets, employee benefits, insurance programs, fiscal audits and reports, budgeting, enrollment, student data, cash management, school activity and study body funds, accreditation reporting, and reviewing policies and procedures. 

The North Slope Borough School District adheres to the State of Alaska Uniform Chart of Accounts, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and the Government Auditing Standards Board (GASB).  The NSBSD Business Department is the recipient of the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) and from the Association of School Business Officials International.  This Certificate is awarded for excellence in preparation and issuance of the school system comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) and, since it's inception in 1972 has gained the distinction of being a prestigious national award.   The NSBSD Business Department is also the recipient of the Distinguished Budget Award from GFOA. In order to receive this award, a government unit must publish a budget document that meets program criteria as a policy document, as an operations guide, as a financial plan, and as a communications device. 

In an effort to maintain the utmost efficiencies, in FY 2007 (July 1, 2006), the NSBSD Business Department has been outsourced to Alaska Education & Business Services, Inc., located at 750 W. 2^nd Avenue, Suite 215, Anchorage, Alaska.
