Amiqnikun: On Sewing Boat Skins

Welcome to the art of sewing seal skin boats. Included in this video are tips and techniques for learning to make the traditional 'umiaq' or seal skin boat used by the Inupiat of Alaska when whaling.

1961: The Duck-In Video

In 1961 Barrow, Alaska was largely a subsistence community. People lived according to the laws of their ancestors and harvested the animals of the Arctic. In 1959, the laws of the Inupiat and the United States were in conflict with each other.

Alaska Native Education Program (ANEP)

The Alaska Native Education Program of the North Slope Borough School District was awarded a Federal Education Assistance grant to undertake Project Sivunmun. Sivunmun is an Inupiaq Eskimo word that expresses the concept of looking forward.
