The role of a professional school counselor encompasses a myriad number of corresponding duties and responsibilities. First and foremost, a school counselor is focused on meeting the developmental needs of all students through a comprehensive school counseling program that is centered on the academic, career, personal, and social needs of the students. Secondly, a
school counselor often works in close partnership with parents, teachers, administrators, and other related professionals within the school as well as the community at-large to assist students to become productive and successful members of the learning community. Lastly, a school counselor effectively works to ensure that all students are adequately prepared for the rigors of the 21st century through the use of standardized assessments that help students identify and explore future educational and professional opportunities. Positive collaboration with local business and industry serves to promote further career insight and exploration. The ASCA (American School Counseling Association) National Standards in the academic, career, and personal/social domains are the foundation for this work.
