Utqiavik, Alaska: The North Slope Borough School Board is pleased to announce they have selected four finalists in the search for a new Superintendent. The Board will interview the finalists via remote meeting on Thursday, April 30th, with the anticipation of appointing a new Superintendent later that day.

The Board has asked the Association of Alaska School Boards to host a virtual forum with the four candidates set to answer questions submitted by District stakeholders. The virtual forum is scheduled for Monday, April 27th from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM. More information and details will be forthcoming soon.

The Board’s selected finalists are:

  • Greg Culbert – Greg Culbert has had a successful career with the Galena City School District since 2001 and is currently serving as the Assistant Superintendent/District Operations director. He also served many years as the Technology Director. Greg was also the Coordinator of Curriculum and Technology for the Yukon Koyukuk School District (1996-98) and a teacher previous to that (1996-98). Mr. Culbert has a B. A. in Education from the Univ. Northern Iowa, graduate certificates in special education (1992), principal (1992), and special education consultant (1994) from Drake Univ. Mr. Culbert has his Superintendent endorsement from UAA (2000). Greg is also a pilot and avid Alaska aviation enthusiast.

  • Pauline Harvey- Pauline has most recently served as the Education Project Manager for the Inuit Circumpolar Council in Anchorage, AK. She has served as UAF Chukchi Campus Director in Kotzebue (2010-2015), and a K-12 principal in Noorvik and Kivalina (2006- 2009), and elementary teacher in the Anchorage school district (1987-2006), and an elementary teacher in Noorvik & Kotzebue (1982-1987). Pauline has earned a B.A in Language Arts from Seattle Pacific University, an M. Ed. In Educational Leadership from UAF, and received her Superintendent Endorsement credential at UAS (June 2019). She greatly enjoys participating in subsistence activities with her husband.

  • Patricia Hutcherson, Ph.D. - Patricia most recently served as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction in the Yupiit School District (2018-19), served as the Interim Executive Director of H.R. for Cascadia College (2016-17), and the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the Northwest Arctic Borough School District. Ms. Hutcherson has a Master of Social Work/Communications from the University of Denver (1979) and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policies also from the University of Denver (2000).

  •  Dr. David Jones - David Jones is currently the principal of Fred Ipalook Elementary School, having served there since 2017. Previously Mr. Jones had a lengthy career with the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District and an elementary principal, a Dean of Students, and a 5th & 6th-grade teacher. David spent 17 years with the Ketchikan School District. He has a B. A. of Liberal Arts from UAS (2002), M.Ed. in Elementary Ed (2005), and an M. Ed. in Education Leadership (2007) from UAS and his Ed.D in Educational Leadership from Northeastern University, Boston (2016). David has worked previously as a professional musician.

The Board intends to announce their choice of a new Superintendent as soon as possible. The new Superintendent is expected to start on or before July 1st, 2020.
