PRESS RELEASE FOR
School Christmas card Contest

Participation in North Slope Borough School District Children’s Christmas Card Contest
Kids Focus: Family Traditions – Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Barrow, Alaska – December 2, 2019

District wide Children’s Christmas Card Art contest opens today which focuses on the themes: Family Traditions – Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
 “Tutqiun” - Peace or
“Kaivinniq” - a time of celebration observed after sewing season or Winter Solstice.

With over 2000 children within the North Slope Borough, we chose a Christmas theme to initiate conversations with students about their family Christmas break traditions.

The North Slope Borough School District Superintendent’s Office sponsored this contest for students to develop artwork that will represent the North Slope’s residents’ family traditions during the holiday season.

The winning artwork is displayed at the North Slope Borough School District Central Office Building. The North Slope winner will be recognized along with his/her parents and teacher at the January School Board of Education Meeting. It is a fitting time for our students to focus on this project as we remember our Inupiaq core values of family, hunting, caring and sharing.

It is wonderful to give our students an opportunity to compete in an art contest, which includes a 100 word essay asking student to tell us about the Christmas card and a 100 word biography about the students which gives the schools across the North Slope a chance for students to discuss their family traditions surrounding the holidays.  we know that there is a great talent at our schools and we hope to engage our students to continue family traditional activities during the Christmas break.
